ABOUT

Welcome to Readers Together (RT), I’m Kelly. I live in the North East of England, and when I’m not working on book-related projects, you can find me refereeing my mini zoo: my young son, the dog, and two cats…and we won't talk about the fish tank that currently holds a fish, two snails, and several shrimps.

I have always had a passion for books. I love reading, whether that be a paperback, an audiobook, or an ebook. I’m also a stickler for attention to detail. So when the opportunity presented itself to proofread for an author I loved, I jumped at the chance. After doing that for quite some time (in fact, occasionally, I still do, time permitting. Yeah, I'm that strange person who will do her work for fun.) another author asked me to help edit their first book, and I caught the bug and never looked back, as they say.

There is something uniquely satisfying about helping an author put their best product out into the world while still maintaining their individual voice and style.

I've been helping authors for six years, and love it, but I know many authors don't just want experience; they want certification as well. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, and I am working my way towards my accreditation with them.

Although I am British, the majority of my work has been with American authors, and I use the Chicago Manual of Style Guide along with the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

As a British reader, one of the things I struggle with the most from non-British authors writing British characters is how stereotypical they often are. So I created the Brit Check. (Full transparency, this may have been offered before by others and called something else.) It is always a fun project to work on. Helping authors with their British content and phrases, ensuring they don’t over-stereotype their characters. Authenticity for the win!

I also provide sensitivity reading for some subjects that need a more nuanced touch. A lived experience. Someone to make sure the author isn't going to harm anyone is the process of telling a good story. Chronic Pain, especially long-term. Chronic Migraines. Adoption, emotionally, and impact, trauma, etc., across the board, but the process is specific to the UK system.

I found audiobooks over ten years ago, and it rapidly became my favourite medium and a passion. Nothing makes me happier than helping to make audiobook dreams come true, whether that’s helping with casting, production, final checks, or marketing.
